Aonach Eagach Guide - Glencoe Mountain Guides

A Guided Traverse of the Aonach Eagach Ridge

A Guided Traverse of the Aonach Eagach Ridge in summer or winter with an Aonach Eagach Guide will always be a day to remember. The Aonach Eagach is considered the hardest and longest of the mainland ridges in Scotland and is a favourite with all of our guides.

The main scrambling section of the ridge is just over 2km's long and looks straight down to the floor of the Glen. Your Aonach Eagach guide can guide you safely across this impressive and exhilarating ridge, making the most of the different sections. The Aonach Eagach Ridge sits between Am Bodach and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh and takes in another Munro called Meall Dearg, it is a committing and rewarding route that is a must do for anyone, especially for those looking to complete the Munro's or the mainland ridge scrambles of Scotland.

The route starts by the main road in Glencoe and climbs steeply to the summit of Am Bodach, from here you head west and the challenges begin. The first obstacle is to down climb from Am Bodach, this downclimb alone has put a stop to many traverse attempts but the confidence of a rope and a professional Aonach Eagach Guide really does make a difference.

From here there is an easy walk/ scramble to the summit of Meall Dearg, then the fun begins. The scrambling from here is much more sustained but never too difficult. With airy drops on either side and a real sense of exposure, this is where the Aonach Eagach gets its reputation. Once the main part of the ridge is over you get to enjoy a magnificent ridge walk to the summit of Sgurr nam Fiannaidh and to take in the magnificent views out to the west towards Ballachulish bridge and the Ardgour peninsula.
